Volkswagen Tiguan facelift for India revealed

The Volkswagen Tiguan, which is set to go on sale in India soon, has been revealed. As we had reported earlier, the Tiguan returns to the Indian market after a year and features cosmetic updates and feature upgrades over the previous model, along with a new 2.0 TSI petrol engine.

  • Volkswagen Tiguan facelift’s front looks distinct compared to the Tiguan Allspace
  • 2.0 TSI engine and 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox shared between Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace
  • Updated features list expected to include a sunroof, three-zone climate control and more

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan: exterior

The refreshed Tiguan’s straight-ruled, almost boxy, and bold design is carried forward from the model that was on sale before BS6 emission norms came into effect. However, the headlight design is sharper and tapers towards the end, and also features new LED Matrix units. The grille has also been tweaked. The front bumper gets triangular-shaped fog light clusters and slated air intakes, which helps provide a certain level of distinction between the Tiguan facelift and its 7-seat counterpart, the Tiguan Allspace.

When viewed dead-on from the rear, the Tiguan looks almost identical to the Allspace, but from the side, the new design 18-inch alloy wheels and the smaller rear overhang does set the 5-seater apart.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan: interior

On the inside, those familiar with the Tiguan Allspace will find the Tiguan to be similar. However, the Tiguan facelift gets a touchscreen interface for the climate control system, instead of rotary knobs and buttons.

Features on the Tiguan are include a powered panoramic sunroof, leather seats, ambient lighting, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, three-zone climate control, an eight-way powered driver’s seat and more. Safety features such as six airbags, ABS, ESP, hill start and descent assist, a tyre pressure monitor, ISOFIX anchors and a Driver Alert System as standard.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan: engine

VW had confirmed earlier that the Tiguan facelift will be offered with a 2.0 TSI engine. This 1,984cc, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine makes 190hp and 320Nm of torque in the Tiguan Allspace and Skoda Superb. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will be standard, along with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan: price and rivals

Petrol-powered rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson (Rs 22.25-23.91 lakh*) and Jeep Compass (Rs 16.99-25.29 lakh) – both of which also get a diesel engine option – are expected to undercut the Tiguan on price, as we expect the range to start at Rs 26 lakh and go up to Rs 29 lakh.
