The premium SUV segment is dominated by two ladder-frame SUVs namely the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. While it also comprises of other body-on-frame models like the Mahindra Alturas G4 and Isuzu MUX, as well as monocoque SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, the VW Tiguan Allsapce and the Skoda Kodiaq, their low sales have resulted very little, to no data in the pre-owned market. Thus in the absence of an adequate database, we’ve focused on the three with substantial data.
Ford Endeavour
While not the segment favourite, the Endeavour still ranks high in terms of desirability. With premium interiors featuring a massive panoramic sunroof, as well as four-wheel drive capability, used examples are witnessing a strong demand. Making the Endeavour hold its value quite well in the used car market with MY2017 and MY2016 diesel automatic models showing only a slightly lower depreciation rate than the segment champ, the Fortuner. There’s also a diesel manual version, however, with fewer sold they are hard to find in the used market.
Toyota Fortuner
The Fortuner is the segment best seller in the new market and thus it does well in the used market too. However, Toyota’s massive reputation for reliability is also a big factor helping the Fortuner hold onto its value. Two- and three-year-old models depreciate the slowest. What’s interesting is that the Fortuner diesel-manual also holds its ground in the pre-owned market, despite automatics being the transmission of choice in the premium SUV segment. Toyota also offered the Fortuner with a petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options, however, their sales comprise a miniscule percentage, hence there isn’t sufficient data in the pre-owned market.
Mahindra Alturas G4
Despite all its many strengths over rivals, Mahindra’s premium SUV falls in value at a much higher rate. This is on account of its lacklustre demand in the new car market driven mainly by a weaker brand equity compared to the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. A two-year-old example loses a whopping 23.36 percent of its average 2019 on-road price of Rs 35.17 lakh; a price hit of over Rs 8 lakh.
